Refining of Metals:
It is the process of purification of the metal obtained after reduction. Various methods for refining are employed but the most common is electrolytic refining.
1. By Liquation : This method is used for the easily fusible metal like tin etc. Impure metal is placed on the inclined bed of a furnace and heated.The metal melts and flow out leaving behind the impurities.
Eg: purification of Sn containing impurities of high melting point like Fe, Cu etc. Also used for purification of Pb, Bi etc.
2. By Distillation: Volatile metals like zinc and mercury etc. can be purified by the method. When these metals are heated their vapour are formed leaving behind the impurities. The vapours are condensed to get pure metals.
